La FundaciónPríncipe deAsturias se constituyó
en la ciudaddeOviedo (Principadode
Asturias-España) el 24de septiembre de 1980,
enun acto solemne que estuvopresidido
por SuAlteza Real el Príncipe deAsturias, Heredero
de laCorona de España, a quien acompañaban
sus padres, SusMajestades los Reyes.
La Fundación es una instituciónprivada
sin ánimode lucro cuyos objetivos primordiales
son consolidar los vínculos existentes entre el
Principado y el Príncipe deAsturias y contribuir
a la exaltación ypromociónde cuantos valores
científicos, culturales yhumanísticos sonpatrimonio
universal.
Como símbolode estos fines últimos
de la FundaciónPríncipe deAsturias y adoptando
la denominacióndel títuloquehistóricamente
pertenece al Herederode laCorona de España,
se crearon en 1981 los Premios Príncipe deAsturias.
Destinados a galardonar la labor científica, técnica,
cultural, social yhumanitaria realizada por personas,
instituciones, grupos de personas ode instituciones
en el ámbito internacional, se conceden enocho
categorías: Artes, Ciencias Sociales, Comunicación
yHumanidades, Cooperación Internacional,
InvestigaciónCientífica yTécnica, Letras, Deportes
yConcordia.
Los Premios son entregados enuna ceremonia
anual por SuAlteza Real el Príncipe deAsturias,
Presidente deHonor de la institución.

byHis Royal Highness The Prince of Asturias,
Heir to the Throne of Spain, whowas accompanied
byhis parents, TheirMajesties TheKing andQueen.
The Foundation is anon-profit private
institutionwhose essential aims are to consolidate
the existing links between the Principality
and the Prince of Asturias and to contribute
to extolling andpromoting those scientific,
cultural andhumanistic values that formpart
ofmankind’s universal heritage.
The Prince of Asturias Awardswere created
in 1981 as a symbol of these ultimate goals
of the Prince of Asturias Foundation and take
their name from the title passeddown through
history to theHeir to the SpanishThrone. Aimed
at rewarding the scientific, technical, cultural,
social andhumanitarianwork carriedout at an
international level by individuals, institutions,
or groups of individuals or institutions, they are
conferred in eight categories: theArts, Social
Sciences, Communication andHumanities,
International Cooperation, Technical and Scientific
Research, Literature, Sports andConcord.
TheAwards are presented at an annual ceremony
byHis Royal Highness The Prince of Asturias,
the institution’sHonorary President.
