Background

Presente en 188 países y con alredeor de 100
millones de miembros y voluntarios, el
Movimiento
Internacional de la Cruz Roja y de la Media Luna
Roja
está compuesto por el Comité Internacional
de la Cruz Roja (CICR), la Federación Internacional
de Sociedades de la Cruz Roja y de la Media Luna
Roja y 188 Sociedades Nacionales. El Movimiento
Internacional, la mayor red humanitaria del mundo,
tiene como misión prevenir y aliviar el sufrimiento
humano, proteger la vida y la salud y hacer respetar
a las personas en tiempo de conflicto armado y en
otras situaciones de urgencia. El germen de la Cruz
Roja se gestó tras la batalla de Solferino (1859),
cuando Henry Dunant organizó a la población para
socorrer a más de cuarenta mil personas que yacían
muertas o heridas sin atención alguna. Propuso
la creación de sociedades nacionales de socorro
para ayudar a heridos en combate, señalando así el
camino hacia los futuros Convenios de Ginebra. La
Cruz Roja nació en 1863 cuando cinco ciudadanos
de Ginebra, incluido Dunant, fundaron el Comité
Internacional para el Socorro de los Heridos que más
tarde daría lugar al Comité Internacional de la Cruz
Roja. La labor de Henry Dunant fue reconocida en
1901 con el primer Premio Nobel de la Paz, junto con

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent
Movement
, present in 188 countries and supported
by some 100 million members and volunteers, is
composed of the International Committee of the
Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation
of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and 188
National Societies. The International Red Cross and
Red Crescent Movement is considered the largest
humanitarian network in the world. Its mission is to
prevent and alleviate human suffering, protect life
and health and ensure respect for people in times of
armed conflict and other emergencies. The germ of
the Red Cross was conceived when Henry Dunant,
following the Battle of Solferino in 1859, organized
the populace to help more than 40,000 people
who lay dead or wounded without any medical
assistance or basic care. He consequently proposed
the creation of national relief societies to care for
those wounded in the field, thus pointing the way
to the future Geneva Conventions. The Red Cross
came into being in 1863 when five Geneva citizens,
including Dunant, founded the International
Committee for Relief to the Wounded, which was
later to become the International Committee of the
Red Cross. Henry Dunant’s work was recognized
in 1901 with the first Nobel Peace Prize, which he
shared with Frédéric Passy.
