Background

numerosos países, con las que ha definido e impulsado
la arquitectura en el último medio siglo. Sus edificios se
caracterizan por un juego virtuoso con formas complejas,
por el uso de materiales poco comunes, como el titanio, y
por su innovación tecnológica, que ha tenido repercusión
también en otras artes”.

Frank O. Gehry
(Toronto, Canadá, 1929) adoptó la
nacionalidad estadounidense después de trasladarse
en 1947 a Los Ángeles con sus padres.
Se graduó en Arquitectura en 1954 en la Universidad
de Baja California y comenzó a trabajar
en el estudio de Victor Gruen.
Comenzó a destacar en la década de los 70 por
sus edificios de formas esculturales que combinan
materiales industriales poco comunes con otros
como el titanio y el vidrio. Desde finales de los
años 80, el nombre de Frank Gehry se ha asociado
al movimiento deconstructivista, caracterizado por
la fragmentación y por la ruptura de un proceso de
diseño lineal, que da como resultado edificios de
una apariencia visual impactante. Su obra ha sido
objeto de numerosos estudios monográficos y en
2006 el director de cine Sydney Pollack estrenó el
documental “Sketches of Frank Gehry” en Cannes.
Sus diseños han recibido más de cien premios en
todo el mundo, entre los que destacan más de una
decena de doctorados honorarios y el Arnold W.
Brunner Memorial Prize (EE.UU., 1983), el Premio
Pritzker (1989), el Wolf de las Artes (Israel, 1992),
el Praemium Imperiale (Japón, 1992), el Friedrich
Kiesler (Austria, 1998) y el Twenty Five Year Award
del Instituto Americano de Arquitectos (2012).
Frank O. Gehry

American nationality after moving to
Los Angeles in 1947 with his parents. He graduated
in Architecture in 1954 from the University of Baja
California and began working in the studio
of Victor Gruen.
He rose to prominence in the 70s for his buildings
with sculptural forms that combine unusual
industrial materials such as titanium and glass with
others. Since the late 80s, the name of Frank Gehry
has been associated with the deconstructionist
movement, characterized by fragmentation and
the rupture of a linear design process, resulting in
buildings with a striking visual appearance. His work
has been the subject of numerous case studies and,
in 2006, the film director Sydney Pollack premiered
the documentary “Sketches of Frank Gehry” at
Cannes. His designs have received over one hundred
awards around the world. Noteworthy among the
distinctions he has received are more than a dozen
honorary degrees, the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial
Prize (USA, 1983), the Pritzker Prize (1989), the Wolf
Prize in Arts (Israel, 1992), the Praemium Imperiale
(Japan, 1992), the Friedrich Kiesler Prize (Austria,
1998), and the Twenty Five Year Award from the
American Institute of Architects (2012).
