Adam Zagajewski, 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, has died.
As stated in the Minutes of the Jury that granted the Award: “Zagajewski’s poetry validates the ethical sense of literature and in a single, yet diverse voice in his native Polish accent unites Western tradition, all the while reflecting on the sorrows of exile. Careful attention to lyrical imagery, the intimate experience of time and the conviction that a certain brilliance feeds the flame of artistic creation form the inspiration for one of the most exciting poetic experiences of this Europe, heir to Rilke, Miłosz and Antonio Machado.”
Chaired by Darío Villanueva Prieto, the Jury was made up of Félix de Azúa Comella, Xosé Ballesteros Rey, Xuan Bello Fernández, Blanca Berasátegui Garaizábal, Juan Cruz Ruiz, Luis Alberto de Cuenca y Prado, Álex Grijelmo García, Manuel Llorente Manchado, Carmen Millán Grajales, Ángeles Mora Fragoso, Carme Riera i Guilera, Ana Santos Aramburo, Sergio Vila-Sanjuán Robert, Juan Villoro Ruiz and José Luis García Delgado, as acting secretary.
The Awards Ceremony, which took place on 20th October, and was presided over by HM King Felipe VI. Besides the address by His Majesty, the speeches at the ceremony were given by Adam Zagajewski, Marcos Mundstock, member of Les Luthiers; Philippe de Montebello, chairman of the board of the Hispanic Society of America; Jean Claude Juncker, Donald Tusk and Antonio Tajani, then Presidents of the European Commission, of the European Council and of the European Parliament respectively; and Matías Rodríguez Inciarte, then President of the Prince of Asturias Foundation.
