The Princess of Asturias Foundation will pay tribute to Ennio Morricone and John Williams, 2020 Princess of Asturias Laureates for the Arts, with a concert conducted by Andrea Morricone and Óliver Díaz, in which the Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra (OSPA) will perform works by both composers.

The concert will take place at 8:00pm on 15th October in the factory building designed by architect Sánchez del Río in La Vega Former Arms Factory, Oviedo, within the framework of “Awards Week”.

These composers’ works include some of the most iconic musical compositions of the silver screen. The repertoire will include compositions by Ennio Morricone such as “The Ecstasy of Gold” from the movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and “Gabriel’s Oboe” from The Mission, which will be conducted by his son Andrea; as well as the main themes of the films Jaws and Star Wars, by John Williams, which will be performed under the baton of Óliver Díaz. In addition, violinist Jesús Reina will take part in the performance of themes from Schindler’s List and Fiddler on the Roof.

Drive-in Cinema
The “Awards Week” programme will also include a pop-up drive-in cinema in the parking lot of this historic location between 8th and 15th October that will host screenings of some classics of the silver screen with soundtracks composed by the Laureates.

The film cycle will commence on 8th October with The Untouchables, which will be followed by three blockbusters directed by Steven Spielberg: Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Jurassic Park. There will also be screenings of Once Upon a Time in America and Once Upon a Time in the West, by Italian director Sergio Leone, and The Mission. Star Wars. Episode IV will close the cycle.

Awards Week
These activities form part of “Awards Week”, a cultural programme designed by the Foundation that includes the participation of the Princess of Asturias Laureates in a variety of activities during the days leading up to the presentation of the Awards. Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at making the Laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work better known to society at large.

Due to the mobility restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the participation of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Laureates in this year’s “Awards Week” will be limited. The cultural programme will be adapted to the special health circumstances of the present moment, adjusting its formats and audiences and centralizing most of the activities on the premises of La Vega Former Arms Factory in Oviedo, thus allowing the formulated prevention plan to be fulfilled with the maximum of guarantees.

Access to all “Awards Week” events is free. The Foundation will announce the complete programme of activities in the coming days, as well as the procedure for obtaining tickets.
