Leonard Cohen, 2011 Prince of Asturias Award for Literature

Leonard Cohen, 2011 Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, has died.

As stated in the Minutes of the Jury, the 2011 Prince of Asturias Award for Literature was conferred on the Canadian poet and novelist Leonard Cohen “for a body of literary work that has influenced three generations of people worldwide through his creation of emotional imagery in which poetry and music are fused in an oeuvre of immutable merit. The passing of time, sentimental relationships, the mystical traditions of the East and the West and life sung as an unending ballad make up a body of work associated with certain moments of decisive change at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century.”

The Jury for the Award was chaired by Víctor García de la Concha and composed of Luis María Anson Oliart, J. J. Armas Marcelo, José Manuel Blecua Perdices, Carmen Caffarel Serra, Amelia Castilla Alcolado, Juan Cruz Ruiz, Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart y Martínez de Irujo, Count of Siruela, José Luis García Martín, Pilar García Mouton, Manuel Llorente Manchado, Rosa Navarro Durán, Berta Piñán Suárez, Fernando Rodríguez Lafuente, Fernando Sánchez Dragó, Diana Sorensen and Román Suárez Blanco, acting as secretary.

The 2011 Awards Ceremony was held on 21st October at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo and was presided over by HM King Felipe VI, then Prince of Asturias. Besides the Prince’s address, speeches were also made by Leonard Cohen, Riccardo Muti, Arturo Álvarez Buylla and Toyohiko Tomioka, on behalf of the Heroes of Fukushima.

Francisco Nieva, 1992 Prince of Asturias Award for Literature

Francisco Nieva, 1992 Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, has died.

As stated in the Minutes of the Jury, the 1992 Prince of Asturias Award for Literature was conferred on Francisco Morales Nieva “in recognition of his continual work in renewing the finest Spanish theatrical tradition, his creative power with words and the inventiveness of his scenic spaces.”

The Jury for the Award was chaired by Octoavio Paz and composed of Jesús Aguirre, Duke of Alba, Luis María Ansón, Bernardo Fernández, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, Antonio Vilanova and José María Martínez Cachero, acting as secretary.

The 1992 Awards Ceremony was held on 31st October at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo and was presided over by HM King Felipe VI, then Prince of Asturias. Besides the Prince’s address, speeches were also made by Nelson Mandela, Frederich G. Conradie, on behalf of Frederick W. de Klerk, Emilio García Gómez and Elizabeth Taylor.
