Luis Fernández-Vega Sanz has been elected President of the Princess of Asturias Foundation by acclamation of the institution’s Board of Trustees at the meeting held this morning in Oviedo.
Luis Fernández-Vega Sanz succeeds Matías Rodríguez Inciarte, who, after ten years at the helm of the Foundation, has been the fourth president of the institution, after Pedro Masaveu (1980-1987), Plácido Arango (1987-1996) and José Ramón Álvarez Rendueles (1996-2008).
At the meeting, the Board of Trustees of the Princess of Asturias Foundation approved the incorporation of two new members, in a personal capacity, namely Gonzalo Urquijo Fernández de Araoz and Teresa Sanjurjo González, in addition to a change in the representation from ArcelorMittal Spain, which is now represented by José Manuel Arias García. The Board of Trustees has agreed to incorporate the Mahou San Miguel Foundation, represented by its president Alfredo Mahou, to the Princess of Asturias Board of Trustees, an honorary body; as well as the incorporation of Flor Álvarez Lloriana and Alfredo Suárez Álvarez as Patrons of the Foundation.
The Princess of Asturias Foundation has granted the Princess of Asturias Awards since 1981. Its Awards Ceremony is considered one of the most important cultural events on the international calendar. Throughout their history, the Awards have received recognition from a variety of sources, such as the UNESCO declaration in 2004 acknowledging their extraordinary contribution to the cultural heritage of humanity.
