Programme of cultural events marking the presentation of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards

Registration for the events will open at 12 noon on Monday 5th October, on the Foundation’s website.

The Princess of Asturias Foundation has put together a broad-ranging programme of cultural activities to mark the fortieth edition of the Princess of Asturias Awards. The events will take place between 8th and 17th October Registration for the activities will open at 12 noon this coming Monday 5th October.

The programme, known as “Awards Week”, comprises around 29 cultural events, some of which will be have several showings. The participation of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Laureates will be limited this year due to the mobility restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The cultural programme will be adapted to the special health circumstances of the present moment, making adjustments both in terms of format –combining in-person and online participation– and the maximum number of participants at any event.

The vast majority of in-person events will once again take place at La Vega Former Arms Factory, Oviedo, a venue that meets the conditions of spaciousness and ventilation suitable for the safety of attendees. The online programme will include meetings, poetry recitals and fun and informative games in new formats adapted to present circumstances.

 “Awards Week” will commence on Thursday 8th October with the opening of the permanent installations and the musical poetry show “Crazy Island: Cervantes and Shakespeare” at LaFPAbrica. A wide variety of activities will take place throughout the week.

The Spanish Ministry of Defence, the Regional Ministry of Education and Culture of the Principality of Asturias, the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament, and Oviedo and Gijón City Councils have all collaborated in the organization of this series of events. In addition, a photographic exhibition has been organized in collaboration with the Banco Sabadell Foundation in tribute to health workers on the front line against COVID-19.

THURSDAY, 8th OCTOBER

Commencement of the Awards Week activities

  • Photographic exhibition (from 8th to 18th October).

    “Beyond the Vocation. Portraits of a Pandemic”. An exhibition of images by photographer Muel de Dios organized in collaboration with the Banco Sabadell Foundation. The photos pay tribute to Spanish health workers on the front line against COVID-19, 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Concord.

  • 12.00 noon Start of the virtual rally circuit

    “Tribute to Carlos Sainz” virtual rally circuit through the city of Oviedo (from 8th to 17th October). The Princess of Asturias Foundation has designed a virtual urban circuit through the streets of Oviedo that you can drive around via the Asetto Corsa video gaming platform throughout Awards Week. To participate, you will need to download an installation file from the Princess of Asturias Foundation’s website.

  • 7:45pm  Opening of “LaFPAbrica. Awards Factory”

    Opening of the permanent installations and the musical show “Crazy Island: Cervantes and Shakespeare”

    Visits to the permanent facilities of “LAFPABRICA. Awards Factory” will take place throughout the week, prior registration at the scheduled times. In order to maintain the necessary safety measures and safeguard the health of visitors, these visits will be carried out in small groups of 25 people at the most. Specific visits to the “Carlos Sainz Workshop”, scheduled for 10th, 11th and 12th October, will be carried out under the same conditions.

    La Vega Arms Factory (Calle Marcelino Fernández, Oviedo).

    “Morricone’s Suite”. Italian artist Rino Stefano Tagliafierro and his company, Karmachina, have conceived a unique conceptual tour of the work of Ennio Morricone, joint 2020 Princess of Asturias Laureate for the Arts. Starting out from the fusion of some of the composer’s most famous musical pieces with representative iconography of the films in which they were included as a soundtrack, they have created an audiovisual show that will captivate the viewer.     “The Liquid Library”. An audiovisual artistic installation in tribute to literature, critical thinking and ideas. Created to mark the conferral of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities on the Guadalajara International Book Fair and the Hay Festival of Literature & Arts, this avant-garde space aims to serve as an invitation to think about the intangibility of knowledge and the dematerialization of the book as a medium.     “Carlos Sainz Workshop”. An exhibition of some of the vehicles with which Carlos Sainz Cenamor, 2020 Princess of Asturias Laureate for Sports, has triumphed.  Venue: Side of the Warehouse.
     

    “Solid White”. In this multidisciplinary space of lyrical evocation, artist Federico Granell adapts his sculptural works to the poems of Anne Carson, 2020 Princess of Asturias Laureate for Literature, creating a dialogue between the two arts. Venue: Arts and Crafts.

    Screening of “Beyond the Vocation. Portraits of a Pandemic”. A digital adaptation of the photographic exhibition paying tribute to Spanish health workers on the front line against COVID-19, 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Concord. Venue: Warehouse.

    “Gavi and the Journey of a Vaccine”. A permanent installation in which the visitor will be able to discover the journey that a vaccine makes from the moment it is available for distribution until it is administered to the child population that needs it. The exhibition also explains the innovative solutions that Gavi, 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, has been applying in this process, as well as the goals of the alliance for the next five-year period.   • 8:30pm     “Crazy Island: Cervantes and Shakespeare”. Directed by Aarón Zapico, this musical poetry show aims to symbolize the twinning of two great literary traditions, Spanish and English, represented by the most outstanding writers of world literature..

  • 2:00pm    Start of the online game “No Signs” (to take place between 9th and 14th October). An online game that will involve the public in a series of fun and informative quests. To solve them, participants will need to investigate the work of the recipients of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research: Yves Meyer, Ingrid Daubechies, Terence Tao and Emmanuel Candès.

  • 7:00pm    Cycle of talks and round tables entitled “Mapping Ideas”: Writing as a Bridge. Throughout “Awards Week”, there will be cycle of talks and round tables in tribute to the Guadalajara International Book Fair and the Hay Festival of Literature & Arts, joint 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. “Writing as a Bridge” constitutes the first of these..

    This round table featuring Alma Guillermoprieto, 2018 Princess of Asturias Laureate for Communication and Humanities, and Juan Villoro Ruiz, both of whom are writers and journalists, will focus on the role of writing as a bridge between cultures, in both the field of journalism and literature.

    Fernando Rodríguez Lafuente, member of the Jury for the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, will moderate the event.

Actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and actor José Luis García-Pérez will feature in this multidisciplinary poetry recital based on one of the most characteristic works of Anne Carson, Princess of Asturias Laureate for Literature, The Beauty of the Husband.   • 6:00pm    First day of the “Tribute to Carlos Sainz” virtual rally championship. As a complement to the virtual rally circuit which can be participated in throughout the week, a “Tribute to Carlos Sainz” virtual rally championship will be held on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th October. The championship will be broadcast on the Foundation’s YouTube and Twitch channels. In addition, the Sunday broadcast will be made from a set located at the FPAbrica. .

  • 7:00pm    “Mapping Ideas” cycle of talks: The Mystery Lives On. Writer Alicia Giménez-Bartlett will delve into the crime novel, highlighting the mark of this genre in the work of John Banville (2014 Prince of Asturias Laureate for Literature), Leonardo Padura (2015 Princess of Asturias Laureate for Literature) and Fred Vargas (2018 Princess of Asturias Laureate for Literature). The event will be hosted by writer Ignacio del Valle.

Four writers from different generations, Fulgencio Argüelles, Laura Castañón, Leticia Sánchez Ruiz and Julio Rodríguez, will review their “lives as readers” and comment on some of the books that have influenced their creative lives.   • 6:00pm  “VaccinAction”.  An online round table in which Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, and Pedro Alonso, Director of the WHO Global Malaria Programme and recipient of the 2008 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation as director of the Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça, will review the history, work model and impact of the alliance on vaccination, as well as the increase in immunization coverage. The round table will be moderated by Maite Arango, Chairperson of Ashoka Spain.

  • 7:00pm   “FIL, A Meeting Point”. To mark the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities conferred on the Guadalajara International Book Fair and the Hay Festival of Literature & Arts, an online meeting will be held in which FIL Director-General Marisol Schulz will review the history, milestones and evolution of this book fair. The event will be moderated by Álex Grijelmo, member of the Jury for the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.

  • 6:00pm  “Invisible Mathematics”. An online meeting with Yves Meyer, Ingrid Daubechies, Terence Tao and Emmanuel Candès, joint recipients of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, featuring a brief review of the Laureates professional careers and a debate on the social contribution of mathematics and its role as a cross-cutting element in all branches of science.  The event will be moderated by Clara Grima, member of the Jury for the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research.

  • 7:00pm   “Good Globalization. A review of Dani Rodrik`s work”. An online meeting with Dani Rodrik, 2020 Princess of Asturias Laureate for Social Sciences. During the event, economist Mauro Guillén Rodríguez, member of the Jury for the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, will talk with the Laureate about the contributions of his work to political economy and the social implications in the international economic system.

    The event will be moderated by Marta Rey García, lecturer at the Economics and Business Faculty, University of A Coruña.

  • 8:00pm     “Symphony Concert”. A concert conducted by Andrea Morricone and Óliver Díaz, in which the Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra (OSPA) will perform works by the composers jointly conferred with the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts. These composers’ works include some of the most iconic musical compositions of the silver screen. The repertoire will include compositions by Ennio Morricone such as “The Ecstasy of Gold” from the movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and “Gabriel’s Oboe” from The Mission, which will be conducted by his son Andrea; as well as the main themes of the films Jaws and Star Wars, by John Williams, which will be performed under the baton of Óliver Díaz. The concert will feature the participation of violinist Jesús Reina.

SATURDAY, 17th OCTOBER

  • 12 noon     “Champions Round Table”. A meeting in which Carlos Sainz Cenamor, 2020 Princess of Asturias Laureate for Sports, will take a tour of different aspects of motor racing. Carlos Sainz will share with the public the milestones of more than three decades as a rally driver among the motorsport elite.

    The event will be moderated by journalist Miguel Martínez, Head of Sports at the Principality of Asturias TV network (TPA).
