The Princess of Asturias Foundation

The Prince of Asturias Foundation has designed an extensive cultural programme that includes the participation of the Laureates in various activities during the days prior to the Awards Ceremony, which will be held on 26^th October in the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.

The programme, called “Awards Week”, includes a total of 14 cultural activities, to be held in Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés and Mieres starting Saturday, 20^th October. Talks, lectures, exhibitions, panel discussions and working meetings will be among the events featuring the Laureates. These cultural events will also count on the participation of professionals, academics and prominent figures from different fields and disciplines from both Spain and abroad.

Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at bringing the Laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work closer to society at large. The Laureates will combine the activities with diverse meetings with the press, the schedule for which will be announced in the coming days.

This cycle of events is sponsored by Banco Herrero, ThyssenKrupp, the HC Energia Foundation, the Abbott Foundation and the Regional Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of the Principality of Asturias.

In addition to the programmed events, the Food Bank Foundation of Asturias will conduct an “Operation Kilo” to mark the conferral of the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord on the Spanish Federation of Food Banks. This action will take the form of a caravan that will visit the main towns of Asturias between Monday, 22^nd and Friday, 26^th October to collect food and publicize the activities of these charitable organisations.

PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES

SATURDAY, 20th OCTOBER

Exhibition by the Asturian Association of Graphic Designers on issues related to the research carried out by Sir Gregory Winter and Richard A. Lerner, Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research. The works will be exhibited in public spaces in Oviedo (Campo San Francisco) and Avilés (Plaza de Domingo Alvarez Acebal). The designs comprising the exhibition will be accompanied by explanatory notes by MIT researcher Amador Menéndez, jury member for the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research.

The exhibition will be open to the public between 20^th and 28^th October.

TUESDAY, 23rd OCTOBER

7:00pm Conference entitled “Rafael Moneo. International Works”, by the Prince of Asturias Laureate for the Arts. Alfonso Toribio, president of the College of Architects of Asturias, will briefly introduce the laureate. The talk will be followed by the opening of the exhibition “Rafael Moneo. International Works”, which includes models of some of the Laureate’s most important edifices.

Free admission until all seats are taken. The talk will be held at the Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista. The exhibition, which will be held in Revillagigedo Palace, will remain open to the public until 13^th January 2013. This exhibition has the support of Cajastur.

WEDNESDAY, 24th OCTOBER

9:30am Breakfast meeting with Sir Gregory Winter and Richard A. Lerner. Research experts from the University of Oviedo and other Spanish universities on the immune system will take part in the event

12:30pm Lecture by Rafael Moneo on Asturian Pre-Romanesque architecture. The Laureate will hold a conversation with a group of professional architects and academics.

12:30pm Visit to the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament by heads of the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL), Prince of Asturias Award for Concord. José Antonio Busto, president of FESBAL, will pronounce a few words to the Members of the Asturian Parliament and other authorities.

7:30pm Meeting with the philosopher Martha C. Nussbaum, Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, “The Importance of the Humanities in Today’s Society”. The event will count on the participation of a group of philosophers and Baccalaureate students.

7:30pm Scientific meeting with Sir Gregory Winter and Richard A. Lerner on their key research findings. The guitarist from the group El Sueño de Morpheo, Juan Luis Suárez, will take part in the event, which will be chaired by Cristina Garmendia, jury member for the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research.

7:30pm Panel discussion on “The Voice of Women in Silent Crises”. Voluntary workers and representatives of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, with field experience in different international crises will take part in the event. The journalist Rosa María Calaf will chair the discussion, which will also count on the participation of: Fatana Ishaq Gailani, 1998 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation and President of the Afghanistan Women’s Council; Mette Lassen Buchholz, Humanitarian Values and Diplomacy Division of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC); María Teresa Garrido Otoya, adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (ICRC) on Women and War; Amal Emam, doctor and volunteer of the Egyptian Red Crescent; and Manuela Cabero, Vice-President of the Spanish Red Cross.

THURSDAY, 25th OCTOBER

11:30am Working meeting with Martha C. Nussbaum. Philosophers, economists and academics from around the country will take part in the event. The meeting will focus on capabilities (understood as “substantive freedoms”), a term coined by the Laureate.

1:15pm Martha C. Nussbaum will visit the exhibition on philosophical texts by Spanish thinkers. The Laureate will also answer questions from students. A plaque containing one of the quotes from her book Not for Profit will be unveiled during the event.

7:30pm Tribute to the video game. Artists and musicians will participate in a meeting addressing the video game world from the viewpoint of the different disciplines of the Fine Arts. Shigeru Miyamoto, Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, will talk about his experience as a video game creator. The journalist Toni Garrido will be the anchor-man for the event.

Tickets will be available from Saturday, 20^th October on (maximum 2 per person). Jovellanos Theatre, in Gijón. The doors to the Jovellanos Theatre will close at 7.15pm. The event will be broadcast live on the Foundation website via streaming video.

7:30pm Meeting between heads of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and media correspondents. Olivier Vodoz, Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Jaslin Salmon, Vice-President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, will hold a talk with several media correspondents. Ángeles Espinosa, El País correspondent for the Middle East, Carlos Franganillo, TVE correspondent in Moscow and Adela Mac Swiney, Chief European correspondent for Notimex, will take part in the talk, which will be chaired by the journalist Rosa Maria Calaf. This event will address the role played by what is considered the largest international humanitarian network in the various conflicts and natural disasters affecting millions of people worldwide.

FRIDAY, 26th OCTOBER

Tribute to Red Cross volunteers. Asturias will play host to a thousand Red Cross volunteers, who will travel to the Principality from different parts of Spain to participate in different activities. The Red Cross will also hold an exhibition between 24^th and 27^th October in Campo San Francisco featuring material to be used for humanitarian care purposes. Expert Red Cross volunteers in each of the areas of action will give informative demonstrations at the site of the exhibition during these dates.
