"Scorsese's Factory", a programme of activities paying tribute to Martin Scorsese, 2018 Princes of Asturias Laureate for the Arts
The Princess of Asturias Foundation has organized around thirty activities that will take place between 11th and 18th October

The Princess of Asturias Foundation will pay tribute to American filmmaker Martin Scorsese, 2018 Princess of Asturias Laureate for the Arts, with some thirty cultural activities focussing on film, music, costumes and other technical aspects of his work.
Under the generic name of “Scorsese’s Factory”, the events will be held between 11th and 18th October at the historic site of the former La Vega Arms Factory, in Oviedo. In addition, the Laboral Theatre and the Jovellanos Theatre, both in Gijón, will respectively host the screening of Taxi Driver accompanied by live music and a meeting between Martin Scorsese and the public.
Film
The programme includes the screening of 18 films in their original versions with Spanish subtitles distributed over two types of sessions organized especially for the occasion. Nine films directed by Martin Scorsese throughout his career will be screened in one group of sessions. Some of these will incorporate live musical performances, such as Raging Bull, where the Siero Chamber Orchestra will play two pieces during key moments of the film.
In the other sessions, the audience will have the chance to see nine movie classics restored by The Film Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Martin Scorsese in 1990. With this purpose in mind, they show the restored films –more than 800 so far– at audiovisual festivals around the world. Awards Week will see the screening of masterpieces such as Il gatopardo, by Luchino Visconti; Shadow of a Doubt, by Alfred Hitchcock; and two copies of films by Charles Chaplin (The Count and The Floorwalker) with live incidental music performed by pianist Ricardo Casas.
Music
Several musical events are also planned during this week. These include two concerts by the duo from Gijón Elle Belga together with a representation of the Princess of Asturias Foundation Youth Choir, in which they will perform pieces written exclusively for the occasion inspired by Scorsese’s films. In addition, the Princess of Asturias Foundation Choir, conducted by maestro José Esteban García Miranda, and the group Forma Antiqva will give a concert of religious music inspired by the film Silence.
The La Salvaje hall and the Gong Galaxy Club on Calle Martínez Vigil, in Oviedo, have subscribed to this tribute and will offer a concert and a DJ session coinciding with the screening of the movie Mean Streets a few hours earlier. They will play music related to the soundtracks of the director’s films.
Film set and social activities
Another of the activities that will be carried out is the “Scorsese Formula”, a recreation of a professional film set where film directors Samu Fuentes and Pablo Fernández and cinematographer Carlos Suárez will explain some of the cinematographic techniques most often used by the filmmaker. Those attending the event can participate in the live recording of a film sequence. In addition, an artistic montage designed by Asturian art group FIUM featuring a boxing ring as the main element will be installed to show the creative universe of Raging Bull in a different way; and an iconic New York taxi cab from the 70s will be on display in which visitors can have their photograph taken or take selfies. The Association of Women Taxi Drivers of Asturias will also drive a typical New York taxi cab, in this case a model dating from the 90s, around the main towns in the Principality.
Panel discussions
Panel discussions on motion pictures and Scorsese will likewise be organized during the week. These will include “Scorsese and Rock”, moderated by music critic Jorge Alonso, in which the use of the musical genre in the director’s films will be discussed; and “Scorsese in Essence”, focussing on his career and his commitment to preserving world film heritage. Philosophy teacher and member of the “Antonio Rico” group Juan Jesús Alonso will moderate the meeting which will also count on the participation of film critic and lawyer Eduardo Torres-Dulce, Member of the Royal Academy of History, film buff and member of the Jury for the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature Luis Alberto de Cuenca and essayist and film critic Carlos Losilla.
There will also be talks focussing on the influence the filmmaker has had over contemporary directors and on topics such as costumes, one of the resources to which Scorsese pays special attention. Fashion designer and couturier Lorenzo Caprile, Project Manager at Peris Costumes María Ortega Cornejo and costume designer Sandy Powell will discuss this theme in the talk entitled “Fashion and Film. A visible thread”.
Scorsese will likewise meet with young filmmakers, screenwriters and representatives from the Spanish film industry, such as producers, critics and editors.
More Scorsese
Outside of the setting of the former La Vega Arms Factory, the following events also linked to the figure of Martin Scorsese will take place, both in Gijón:
- The Laboral Theatre will host the screening of a “Symphonic Taxi Driver”, in which the Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra (OSPA), conducted by Robert Ziegler, will interpret the soundtrack of the film during its screening.
- - The American filmmaker will meet with the public at the Jovellanos Theatre (Gijón), in which film director and member of the Jury for the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts Sergio Sánchez will act as moderator of the event and pass on to him questions posed by the public. These questions can be posed during the events held on previous days and via the registration forms that will be accessible on the Foundation website (www.fpa.es) as of 8th October.
ADMISSION:
- Admission to the events will be free of charge but requires prior registration via the Foundation website (www.fpa.es) from 8th October.
- For the screening of “Symphonic Taxi Driver”, a maximum of two tickets per person may be collected as of 6th October, between 12 noon and 2:00pm and between 5:30pm and 8:00pm, from the box offices at the Principality of Asturias Tourist Information Centre (CITPA) in Oviedo, the Laboral City of Culture and the Jovellanos Theatre in Gijón, and the Niemeyer Centre in Avilés.
- In the case of Scorsese’s meeting with the public at the Jovellanos Theatre, tickets can be collected from 12 noon on 13th October, with a maximum of two tickets being available per person.
- Admission to the meeting with professionals from the film world will be strictly by invitation only.

- 8.00pm Artistic montage
“Inauguration of The Ring. A Raging Bull installation”. This artistic montage will allow spectators to approach the film Raging Bull (1980) in a different way. Designed and created by Asturian art group FIUM, this will be a permanent installation that may be visited while the premises of the Arms Factory are open to the public. It will be inaugurated prior to the screening of Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese, 1980).

“Special screening of Raging Bull” (Martin Scorsese, 1980). Siero Chamber Orchestra, conducted on the occasion by Asturian musician Aarón Zapico, will offer a live rendition of two musical pieces from key moments in the film: the “Intermezzo” from Cavalleria Rusticana and the “Barcarola” from the opera Silvano, by Pietro Mascagni.

“Chaplin with piano accompaniment”. The Film Foundation lent its support in the restoration of two of Charlie Chaplin’s most outstanding films, The Count and The Floorwalker. These films will be accompanied by live music performed by pianist Ricardo Casas.
The Count. (1916) was restored by the Cineteca di Bologna at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, in collaboration with Lobster Films and Film Preservation Associates. Funding for the restoration was provided by The Film Foundation, the George Lucas Family Foundation and the Material World Charitable Foundation.

The set will comprise all the necessary elements to film a scene and those attending the event will have the chance to shoot a live sequence using these techniques.

“Big Band”. The Scorsese Big Band, conducted by Jesús Ángel Arévalo, will offer a repertory of musical pieces included in soundtracks of the New York director’s films, ranging from classics of American music from the early 20th century to vibrant soul songs. Yard. - 6.00pm Panel discussion
“Scorsese’s Generation”. Moderated by historian and documentalist Luis E. Parés, this meeting will analyse Martin Scorsese’s career, his influence on contemporary directors and the reasons why he has become a must reference in the history of cinema. It will feature the participation of film director Rodrigo Cortés, film critic Jordi Costa and film journalist Pepa Blanes.

“Elle Belga”. The duo from Gijón Elle Belga will give a concert of musical pieces written exclusively for this programme inspired by themes from Scorsese’s films. “Scorsese Radio”. Musicians and critics come together to analyse the use of rock music in Martin Scorsese’s movies. The filmmaker has made classic documentaries on the genre, such as The Last Waltz and No Direction Home. The panel will feature music critic Jorge Alonso, who will act as moderator, musician Mikel Erentxun, music critic in charge of the music area of El País newspaper Fernando Navarro and journalist and musician Alicia Álvarez. DJ Enrique Reigada will add some musical spice to the gathering with themes by Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones, among others.

“Symphonic Taxi Driver” The Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra (OSPA), conducted by Robert Ziegler, will offer a live rendition of the film’s soundtrack, composed by Bernard Herrmann.
This screening with live music will be carried out in collaboration with Sony Pictures, Park Circus, Southbank Centre and the Film British Institute. The soundtrack is reproduced with the permission of the Bernard Herrman Estate.

WEDNESDAY, 17th OCTOBER
- 7.30pm A Meeting with Martin Scorsese
“Martin Scorsese meets with the public”. The audiences and participants at the events scheduled over the previous days will be able to attend a meeting with Martin Scorsese. The purpose of the event is to pay tribute to his career, his filmography and his facet as a champion of film preservation. The public can pose questions during the activities that take place during Awards Week and via the registration forms that will be available on the Foundation website (www.fpa.es) from 8th October. Film director and member of the Jury for the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts Sergio Sánchez will act as moderator and pass on questions to Scorsese during the event.
Tickets will be made available from 12 noon on 13th October from the Jovellanos Theatre box office. The Foundation will make 900 seats available for the public. A maximum of two tickets will be made available per person. There will be simultaneous interpretation at the event.

Asturian pianist Jacobo de Miguel, accompanied by Fernando Arias (percussion) and Gabriel Ureña (violoncello), will provide the soundtrack for several pieces of silent films restored with the support of The Film Foundation. These will be Les Fromages Automobiles (1907) by G. Méliès, Tramp Strategy (1911) by Alice Guy Blaché and The Cure (1917) by Charles Chaplin.
Les Fromages Automobiles (1907) by G. Méliès is a collection from the George Eastman Museum, whose conservation efforts have been funded by The Film Foundation
Tramp Strategy (1911) by Alice Guy Blaché was recovered by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and Technicolor, in cooperation with EYE Film Institute Netherlands and Be Natural Productions. The restoration work was funded by New York Women in Film & Television, the Women’s Film Preservation Fund and The Film Foundation.
The Cure. (1917) by Charles Chaplin was restored by the Cineteca di Bologna at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, in collaboration with Lobster Films and Film Preservation Associates. Funding for the restoration was provided by The Film Foundation, the George Lucas Family Foundation and the Material World Charitable Foundation.

Asturian pianist Jacobo de Miguel, accompanied by Fernando Arias (percussion) and Gabriel Ureña (violoncello), will provide the soundtrack for several pieces of silent films restored by The Film Foundation. These will be Les Fromages Automobiles (1907) by G. Méliès, Tramp Strategy (1911) by Alice Guy Blaché and The Cure (1917) by Charles Chaplin.
Admission by invitation only.
Arts and Crafts. - 8.00pm Screening
The Red Shoes. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (1948). A film restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive in collaboration with BFI, The Film Foundation, ITV Global Entertainment Ltd. and Janus Films. Funding for the restoration was provided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, The Film Foundation and the Louis B. Mayer Foundation.
