Princess of Asturias Awards 09/24/2020

The presentation of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards will take place in the Reconquista Hotel´s Covadonga Assembly Room

The presentation of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards, presided by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain and Their Royal Highnesses the Princess of Asturias and the Infanta Sofía, will take place Friday, October 16 at 6:30 PM in the Reconquista Hotel’s Covadonga Assembly Room, in Oviedo.

Due to the exceptional situation produced by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees decided in an extraordinary session, held on August 31, that the presentation of the awards would not take place in the Campoamor Theatre and instead be moved to another venue.

The Covadonga Assembly Room has deep historical ties to the institution. Exactly 40 years ago today, on September 24, 1980, the founding act of the Princess of Asturias Foundation (then Prince of Asturias) was signed in the room. It is also where the jury announces its decisions on award winners and where Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain personally receive the laureates.

With the utmost goals of protecting individual and public health and minimizing the risk of contributing to the virus’s propagation, the act of presenting the awards will include an extremely limited number of people (laureates and authorities) and will take place without an audience. It will be broadcast live on television and various social media platforms.

The Foundation’s Board of Trustees, Patrons and the families of award winners will be able to follow the event live via screens installed in another room inside the same Hotel.

In the context of the pandemic, the Board of Trustees also agreed to the following resolution related to the presence of the laureates: “given the varied and complex situation in the laureates’ distinct countries of residence, the Foundation will not request that they travel to Asturias to attend the ceremony. Those who, of their own accord, desire to attend and who reside in territories where travel restrictions do not impede them, are able if they so choose.”

This measure is supplemented by the following addendum to the 2020 Princess of Asturias Regulations, which was passed last April: “regardless of whether or not they attend the ceremony, all laureates will receive the sculpture, insignia, diploma and economic endowment that correspond to their award.”
