Following the process initiated three years ago to reduce the environmental impact generated by its activities, the Prince of Asturias Foundation has been working with the Ecology and Development Foundation-ECODES to offset the carbon footprint resulting from the activities carried out during Awards Week. This commitment has resulted in the 2012 Prince of Asturias Awards being conferred with the CeroCO2 label (i.e. for net zero CO2 emissions).

ECODES has estimated the carbon footprint resulting from all the events of the week at 315.5 tonnes of CO2, performing the calculation on the basis of data from 2011. This figure will be updated following the completion of all activities in this edition. It includes emissions from energy consumption and paper, as well as the movements that occur as a result of events organised around the Awards Ceremony and the preparatory sessions.

The Foundation has decided to offset its carbon footprint through the CeroCO2 programme project “Conservation of the Peruvian Amazon in Madre de Dios”. This initiative aims to prevent the deforestation of 100,000 hectares of forest in the Vilcabamba-Amoro eco-corridor, an area in which endangered plant and animal species have their habitat. Its verification by CCBS-Gold also guarantees benefits to local communities and the sustainable development of local producers and indigenous communities.

Via its CeroCO2 label and programme, ECODES works to enable Spanish companies and organizations to offset their carbon footprint. The compensation consists of a voluntary monetary contribution for each tonne of CO2 generated to a project that avoids or captures the same amount of CO2 in a developing country.

Electric cars

In addition to the aforementioned compensation, the environmental commitment of the Prince of Asturias Foundation includes reducing its carbon footprint. To this end, this year it will count on two electric vehicles donated by the HC Energía Foundation, which will be used for staff to move around the city of Oviedo.

HC Energía, a Spanish company belonging to the EDP Group, forms part of the Prince of Asturias Foundation Board of Trustees. The Foundation also carried out a similar experience in 2009 with an electric car donated by the Prodintec Foundation.
