Javier Pérez de Cuellar, Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, has died

The Jury has bestowed the Award in 1987 for his work “in defence of peace, international security, human rights and cooperation between nations”

Javier Pérez de Cuellar, 1987 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, has died.

He received the award in 1987 for his work “in defence of peace, international security, human rights and cooperation between nations, particularly between those making up the Latin American community”.

The Jury was chaired by Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo and made up of Claudio Boada, Emilio Botín Ríos, Jaime Carvajal y Urquijo, Obdulio Fernández, Martín González del Valle, Gerardo Iglesias, Manuel Olivencia, Jaime de Piniés, Manuel de Prado y Colón de Carvajal, José Prat, José Joaquín Puig de la Bellacasa, Antonio Ramalho Eanes, Luis Yáñez-Barnuevo and Teodoro López-Cuesta Egocheaga, as acting secretary.

The Awards Ceremony, which took place on 29th October, and was presided over by TM The King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía and the then Prince of Asturias, HM King Felipe VI. Besides the address by His Majesty, the speeches at the ceremony were given by Camilo José Cela, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar and Plácido Arango, then President of the Foundation.
