As a complement to classroom teaching, the teachers and students of the International Music School 2014 Summer Courses will give ten concerts during these days at the Prince Felipe Auditorium and at the Cajastur Cultural Centre in Oviedo. Admission will be with free until all seats are taken. A series of street concerts will also be held between 21st and 25th July in the Plaza de la Constitución in Oviedo.
A hundred and sixty-three students from Argentina, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Peru, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain are participating in the courses. The opening ceremony for the courses was attended by HM Queen Letizia. Lebanese violinist Ara Malikian delivered the inaugural lecture. In previous years, the courses have been opened by relevant figures from the music world such as Jorge Ruíz, leader of the Spanish pop/rock group “Maldita Nerea”; music producer Carlos Jean; Fernando Argenta, host of the music programmes “Clásicos Populares” and “El Conciertazo”; singers Luz Casal, Victor Manuel and Ainhoa Arteta; and Galician musician Carlos Nuñez.
Twenty-nine professors of twelve different nationalities will give classes covering the standard range of symphonic orchestral instruments, in addition to musical ensemble classes for Youth Orchestra and Junior Orchestra (both with programmes focussing on feature or animated film scores), Chamber Music, String Quartet, Wind Ensemble, Jazz and Little Band.
This year, the School is to launch the Conducting Department, imparting classes in Orchestral Conducting. Also for the first time, students will have a complementary activity called “Concert Forum” consisting of audio-visual screenings of concerts linked to Prince of Asturias Award Laureates recorded in Oviedo on the occasion of the Awards Ceremony. In order for string students to gain first-hand knowledge of the basics of maintaining their musical instruments, the School has scheduled the workshop entitled “The Work of the Luthier”, which will be given by the instrument builder Diego del Valle. The Musical Page 2 / 4 Health Department also continues this year, imparting the subject “Human body resources applied to music”, aimed at developing naturalness, postural habits and the body-mind relationship in musicians.
