The city of Gdansk

Princess of Asturias Award for Concord 2019

Statement by Aleksandra Dulkiewicz following the granting of the 2019 Princess of Asturias Award for Concord on the city of Gdańsk

“It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that I have received the news that the city of Gdańsk was awarded the Princess of Asturias Award in the Concord category.

I am aware that there were a lot of outstanding candidacies in this particular category. Yet, the jury chose to award Gdańsk above all. This proves that Gdańsk is a very exceptional city – open, tolerant and free. Late Mayor of Gdańsk – Mr. Pawel Adamowicz used to call Gdańsk “the City of Freedom and Solidarity”. Now we can add one more significant word: “the City of Freedom, Solidarity and Concord”. Mr. Adamowicz would be very happy and proud to call Gdańsk the City of Concord. Thank you very much for this honour. We will certainly live up to it.

I would also like to thank all those, who supported the candidacy of Gdańsk with their numerous recommendation letters and offered their assistance and encouragement throughout the application process. It would not have been possible for Gdańsk to become the “City of Concord” if so many distinguished people had not considered Gdańsk worth this honour.
