Richard Sierra, Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, has died

He was conferred the Award in 2010 for “his audacity in structuring –from his minimalist perspective– the most significant spaces at an international scale through works of great visual power that are an invitation to reflection and wonder”

Richard Serra, 2010 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, has died.

The Jury decided to bestow the Award on Richard Serra for “his audacity in structuring –from his minimalist perspective– the most significant spaces at an international scale through works of great visual power that are an invitation to reflection and wonder. With strong links to the best tradition of European art throughout his brilliant career, Serra is a multifaceted artist whose universal stature is expressed in forceful forms and suggestive concepts.”

The Jury was chaired by José Lladó Fernández-Urrutia and made up of Mercedes Álvarez, Lourdes Fernández, José Fernández-Velasco, Carlos Fitz-James Stuart Martínez de Irujo, Duque de Huéscar, José Luis Garci, Jordi García Candau, Rosina Gómez-Baeza, Emilio Marcos Vallaure, Hans Meinke, Miguel Muñiz, Benigno Pendás García, Amelia Valcárcel and with José Antonio Caicoya as acting secretary.

The Awards Ceremony, which took place on 22nd October, was presided over by HM King Felipe VI, then Prince of Asturias. Besides the address by His Majesty, the speeches at the ceremony were given by Zygmunt Bauman, Alain Touraine, Amin Maalouf, Vicente del Bosque and Matías Rodríguez Inciarte, then President of the Princess of Asturias Foundation.
