What we wish and pursue is for our young
people to receive a well-rounded education
as free human beings aware of their social
responsibilities – people convinced that our
ultimate goal is to achieve a fairer society
and who know that we have inherited our
planet 'on loan', to be passed on to future
generations in optimum condition.

Lo que deseamos y pretendemos es que
nuestros jóvenes alcancen una formación
integral como seres humanos libres y
conscientes de su responsabilidad social.
Personas convencidas de que el fin último
es conseguir una sociedad más justa y
de que hemos heredado nuestro planeta
como un préstamo que debemos transmitir
a las futuras generaciones en las mejores
condiciones.
Como escritores, afilamos nuestras frases
para que alcancen el corazón de las cosas.
Pero eso no sucederá, somos demasiado
torpes. Sin embargo, perseveramos en
nuestro intento de expresar la existencia.
Nunca lo conseguiremos, pero como
bien sabía mi compatriota Samuel
Beckett, nuestra gloria estriba en persistir,
desalentados, pero jamás vencidos.

As writers, we hone our sentences so that
they might cleave through to the quick of
things. They will not; we are too humanly
slow. Yet we go on, trying to say it, trying
to get it said, trying to get it right. We shall
not succeed, but our glory is, as my fellow
countryman Samuel Beckett knew, that we
carry on, daunted but never quite defeated.
