Emma Bonino, Prince of Asturias Laureate for International Cooperation, has died
Laureate in 1998, for “the striving to improve the condition of women and, overall, that of the societies”
Emma Bonino, 1998 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, has died.
The Jury agreed to grant her the award, together with other outstanding advocates of women’s rights, “to express its concern for the situation of women in many places throughout the world, especially in those where women are discriminated against or their full equality as human beings is denied”. The Minutes reflect that these women “stand out for their endeavours in favour of women´s rights, peace, the defence of children afflicted by war and conflict, and for their efforts supporting solidarity among persons and peoples, which makes them deserving of this Award”.
The Jury, chaired by Adolfo Suárez, was also made up of Enrique Álvarez, Agustín Antuña, Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo, Enrique Fernández Miranda, Fernando Ramón Fernández Noval, Antonio Garrigues Walker, Martín González del Valle, Felipe González, Guillermo Kirkpatrick, Marcelino Oreja Aguirre, Luis Guillermo Perinat, Francisco Pinto Balsemão, Ovidio Sánchez, Nicolás Sartorius, Gustavo Suárez Pertierra and Teodoro López-Cuesta Egocheaga (as acting secretary).
The Awards Ceremony, which took place on 23rd October, was presided over by HM King Felipe VI, then Prince of Asturias. Besides the address by His Majesty, the speeches at the ceremony were given by Francisco Ayala, Emma Bonino, Jacques Santer, and the then president of the Foundation, José Ramón Álvarez Rendueles.
