"Graciela Iturbide: Spain and Mexico", an exhibition in tribute to the Princess of Asturias Laureate for the Arts

Under the title “Graciela Iturbide: Spain and Mexico”, the Princess of Asturias Foundation has organized an exhibition in tribute to the Mexican photographer, 2025 Princess of Asturias Laureate for the Arts. In addition to some of her most iconic photos, the show includes a selection of previously unpublished images, many of them taken in Spain.

The exhibition will be open between 16th and 25th October at the La Vega Arms Factory in Oviedo within the framework of “Awards Week”. Its curator, Beatriz Mackenzie, will offer a guided tour on Thursday 16th October, coinciding with its opening.

The show brings together 173 photographs organized into series that include portraits of individuals and reflect rituals from both countries. Additionally, the exhibition will also include two installations designed specifically for the occasion: a cornfield, a symbol of the shared culture between Asturias and Mexico; and the audiovisual work Rara avis, which evokes the symbolic universe of birds, a recurring motif in Iturbide’s work.

A meeting with Graciela Iturbide
Graciela Iturbide will officially inaugurate the exhibition at 6:30pm on Monday 20th October. Following the visit, she will hold a meeting with the public at the La Vega Arms Factory, which will be hosted by editor Ramón Reverté.

Awards Week
These activities form part of “Awards Week”, a cultural programme designed by the Foundation that includes the participation of the Princess of Asturias Laureates in a variety of activities during the days leading up to the Awards Ceremony at the Campoamor Theatre. Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at making the Laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work better known to society at large.
Admission to all “Awards Week” events is free. The Foundation will announce the complete programme of activities in the coming days, as well as how to register to attend the different events.
