Sebastião Salgado, 1998 Prince of Asturias for the Arts, has died.

As stated in the Minutes of the Jury that granted the Award: “he has known how to portray the human condition and to render the inequalities of the modern world with an artistic treatment that is personal, engaged, poetic, and technically rigorous.”

The Jury was chaired by José Lladó y Fernández-Urrutia and made of José Luis Álvarez, José María Ballester, María de Corral López-Dóriga, Guillermo García Alcalde, Miguel Ángel Gozalo, Luis Hernando, Manuel Martín Ferrand, Benigno Pendás García, Alfonso Pérez Sánchez, Trinidad Rodríguez, Rodrigo Uría Meruéndano, Amelia Valcárcel and José Antonio Caicoya Cores secretary of the jury).

The Awards Ceremony, which took place on 23rd October, was presided over by HM King Felipe VI, then Prince of Asturias. Besides the address by His Majesty, the speeches at the ceremony were given by Francisco Ayala, Jacques Santer, Emma Bonino and José Ramón Álvarez Rendueles, then President of the Princess of Asturias Foundation.
