Dani Rodrik 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences

Dani Rodrik

In the course of its online meeting, the Jury for the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, made up of Juan Barja de Quiroga Losada, Adela Cortina Orts, Juan Pablo Fusi Aizpurúa, Mauro Guillén Rodríguez, Silvia Iranzo Gutiérrez, Emilio Lamo de Espinosa Michels de Champourcin, Óscar Loureda Lamas, Manuel Menéndez Menéndez, Enrique Moradiellos García, Montserrat Moreno Marimón, Emilio Ontiveros Baeza, Jaime Pérez Renovales, Rafael Puyol Antolín, Isaac Querub Caro and Myriam Seco Álvarez, chaired by Carmen Iglesias Cano, Countess of Gisbert, and with Marta Elvira Rojo acting as secretary, has decided to grant the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences to the Turkish economist Dani Rodrik.

Professor Rodrik has strengthened the rigour of the analysis of the globalization dynamics of international economic relations, contributing conclusions that help improve the functioning of the economic system and make it much more sensitive to society’s needs.

His studies point to the need to improve the governance of globalization, a topic of major relevance at a time in which multilateralism is under question. At a juncture in which the growing deficit of global governance and the need to generate public goods become more evident (and which the current pandemic evidences), Dani Rodrik’s work provides essential instruments for the analysis of international relations and the strengthening of multilateral institutions.

Rodrik’s work has led economic analysis and political economy toward a domain that is closer to reality. He has contributed not only to expanding our knowledge of the international economy, but also to making it compatible with peace and with reducing poverty and inequality.
