Princess of Asturias Award for Technical & Scientific Research 2022
At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2022 Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, made up of Juan Luis Arsuaga Ferreras, César Cernuda Rego, Juan Ignacio Cirac Sasturáin, Avelino Corma Canós, Elena García Armada, Jerónimo López Martínez, Sir Salvador Moncada, Concepción Alicia Monje Micharet, Ginés Morata Pérez, Inés Rodríguez Hidalgo, María Teresa Telleria Jorge, María Paz Zorzano Mier, chaired by Pedro Miguel Echenique Landiríbar and with Manuel Toharia Cortés acting as secretary, has unanimously decided to jointly grant the 2022 Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific and Research to scientists Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun, Yoshua Bengio and Demis Hassabis for their contributions to the advancement of Artificial Intelligence and its full integration in society.
Their contributions to the development of ‘deep learning’ have led to major advances in techniques as diverse as speech recognition, natural language processing, object perception, machine translation, strategy optimization, the analysis of protein structure, medical diagnosis and many others. Its current and future impact on the progress of society may be described as extraordinary.
