Princess of Asturias Awards 06/19/2009

Vicente Ferrer, 1998 Prince of Asturias Award for Concord, has died

Vicente Ferrer, joint 1998 Prince of Asturias Award Laureate for Concord, together with Nicolás Castellanos, Joaquín Sanz Gadea and Muhammad Yunus, has died. 

The Jury, in its minutes dated 19th July 1998, decided to confer the award unanimously "in consideration of their unselfish and tireless efforts and exemplary contribution, in different geographical areas and spheres of activity, to the advancement and improvement of people's living conditions, thereby leading to an increased understanding among human beings".

The Jury was chaired by Sergio Marqués and was also made up of Gabino de Lorenzo Ferrera, José Ramón Álvarez Rendueles, Adolfo Barthe Aza, José Celma Prieto, Ramón Colao Caicoya, José Cosmen Adelaida, Juan Manuel Desvalls, José Ramón Fernández Cuevas, Pedro Ferreras, Juan de Herrera, Guillermo Luca de Tena, Elías Masaveu, Matías Rodríguez Inciarte, Luis Manuel Tejuca, Santiago de Ybarra y Churruca and Pedro de Silva Cienfuegos-Jovellanos (as acting secretary).

The Award Ceremony took place on 23rd October and was chaired by H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias. Speeches were given by the writer Francisco Ayala, Jacques Santer, Emma Bonino, the Foundation's president at the time, José Ramón Álvarez Rendueles, and Don Felipe de Borbón.
