Juan Mayorga

Princess of Asturias Award for Literature 2022

At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2022 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, composed of Xosé Ballesteros Rey, Xuan Bello Fernández, Blanca Berasátegui Garaizábal, Anna Caballé Masforroll, Gonzalo Celorio Blasco, Jesús García Calero, José Luis García Delgado, Pablo Gil Cuevas, Francisco Goyanes Martínez, Carmen Millán Grajales, Rosa Navarro Durán, Leonardo Padura Fuentes, Ana Santos Aramburo, Jaime Siles Ruiz, Diana Sorensen, Juan Villoro Ruiz, chaired by Santiago Muñoz Machado and with Sergio Vila-Sanjuán Robert acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 2022 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature on Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga for the tremendous quality, critical insight and intellectual commitment of his oeuvre: action, emotion, poetry and thought. Since his beginnings as a playwright, Mayorga has proposed a formidable renovation of theatre, endowing it with a moral and philosophical concern that challenges our society by conceiving his work as a theatre for the future and for the essential dignity of human beings.
