Asturian emigration to America constituted a significant phenomenon between the mid-19th century and the first third of the 20th century, with approximately 350 000 people leaving Asturias in search of new opportunities.  This migratory movement had a profound impact on Asturian history and society, leaving its mark on the region’s architecture, folklore and culture, as well as on several countries in South and Central America.

Douglas Massey will visit the Indiano Archives in Colombres to discuss these and other issues related to his fields of study in a talk moderated by director of the institution Santiago González Romero which will also count on the participation of Joaquín Arango, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid who has collaborated with the Laureate.
