Altar of Longings. Art installation

Coordinated by artist Toño Velasco, the “Altar of Longings” workshop invited migrants to create a collective altar inspired by Mexican altarpieces: votive paintings with which migrants expressed gratitude for miracles and overcoming difficulties on their journey to the United States. The previous workshops that led to this installation sought to have participants express their dreams and desires in paintings, reflecting their experiences and hopes. Both the activity and the work take as a reference the work carried out by sociologist Douglas Massey, 2025 Princess of Asturias Award Laureate for Social Sciences, on the votive offerings of Mexican migrants in the United States.

  • Place: La Vega Arms Factory. Commercial Warehouse.

In the thinking of 2025 Princess of Asturias Laureate for Communication and Humanities Byung-Chul Han, reflection and rest are essential for recovering the profundity lost in a society obsessed with productivity. As in tending a garden, only through silence and pause can human beings rediscover themselves and make room for a more genuine and empathetic relationship with others. This space will also host activities related to key aspects of the Laureate’s work.
