Graciela Iturbide 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts

In the course of its online meeting, the Jury for the 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, made up of Claude Bussac, Oliver Díaz Suárez, Josep Maria Flotats i Picas, Maribel López Zambrana, Joan Matabosch Grifoll, Isabel Muñoz Villalonga, María Pagés Madrigal, Christina Rosenvinge Hepworth, Teresa Sapey and Carlos Urroz Arancibia, chaired by Miguel Zugaza Miranda and with Aarón Zapico Braña acting as secretary, has unanimously decided to grant the 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts to Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide.
Possessing an innovative approach and endowed with extraordinary artistic depth, Iturbide’s lens has captured human nature through photographs laden with symbolism, creating a world of her own: from the primitive to the contemporary; from the harshness of social reality to the spontaneous magic of the moment.
Graciela Iturbide’s black-and-white body of work combines a documentary aspect with a poetic sense of image. Through her camera, she captures everyday life in Mexico with a profound, respectful and evocative perspective. Her images not only show what she sees, but also what she feels. Each photograph carries an emotional and cultural charge that invites us to look beyond what is visible to the eye.
