Studio Ghibli 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities
At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, composed of Irene Cano Piquero, Juan Fernández-Miranda Fernández-Miranda, Álex Grijelmo García, Alma Guillermoprieto, Isabel Izquierdo Peraile, Miguel Ángel Liso Tejada, Begoña Lolo Herranz, Catalina Luca de Tena y García-Conde, Marchioness of Valle de Tena, Cristina de Middel Puch, Miguel Ángel Oliver Fernández, Enrique Pascual Pons, Ana Santos Aramburo and Diana Sorensen, chaired by Miguel Falomir Faus and with Óscar Loureda Lamas acting as secretary, has agreed to grant the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities to the Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli for having exceptionally transformed creativity into knowledge and communication.
Employing a highly imaginative artisanal process, they have created universal stories brimming with sensitivity and humanistic values: friendship, empathy and tolerance, as well as respect for people and nature. The studio’s films transcend generations and borders, and serve as a reference for the challenges of globalized society and the protection of the environment.
Studio Ghibli’s films celebrate the beauty of the everyday and make moments of silence and contemplation an essential part of their narratives.
